Forthcoming Visits & Events

The Cinema Theatre Association organises visits to cinemas and theatres, past and present, across the UK and overseas. Lectures and other events feature in our programme of activities too.

There are in-person events which are usually for members only, and also online events which can be enjoyed by anyone, although members pay less for their tickets - so why not join us to enjoy all the benefits of CTA membership?

INDEPENDENTS and HIDDEN GEMS by Martyn Capewell

At 11.45am prompt (doors open at 11.30am) on Saturday 30 May 2026

Venue: The Gallery, Cowcross Street, Farringdon, London

An illustrated talk about independent cinema operators who designed their buildings to differ from the influence of ‘house-style’ imposed by the major chains.

Our presenter Martyn Capewell travelled the UK photographing cinema buildings and their architecture during the 1970s as part of his job, recording cinemas for posterity- and our delight- during this talk. Many of these images have not been seen previously, so this is a rare opportunity to enjoy some nostalgia for our wonderful and varied UK cinema history. Martyn’s presentation (accompanied by Allen Eyles) to the CTA during our 2025 Christmas Event was very well-received, hence his invitation to return with a larger selection of images.

The talk will finish at about 12.45pm, allowing CTA members attending the AGM at 2pm ample time to enjoy a social lunch break locally.

This is a free of charge event and no booking is required.

Venue: The Gallery at Alan Baxter Associates, 75 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EL (entrance is opposite the ‘Snappy Snaps’ shop), go through the gates, across the yard and down a few steps).

Getting there: The Gallery is situated close to Farringdon Station – transport services are provided by Thameslink, Elizabeth Line, Circle/Metropolitan/Hammersmith & City underground (please check your chosen transport method before setting out).
